Labor Day - More than One Cause for Celebration!

Next Monday we will celebrate Labor Day – the annual day to recognize workers, and for many a long weekend to enjoy the official end of summer.  The first Monday in September has been Labor Day since 1894.  And while the origins of this holiday were rooted in the ascendance of labor unions, now, 124 years later, there is ample cause for celebrations for all workers.  With the memories of the financial crisis fading along with the years of high unemployment and under-employment, we are now seeing record levels of employment among virtually all segments.  And perhaps even more significantly, we are beginning to see wages increase.  It is inevitable that with labor shortages or constraints, employers will likely have to provide training, enhance benefits and increase wages to attract workers needed to continue to build and grow businesses.  And while labor shortages or constraints sometimes create inflationary pressure that may reduce the purchasing power of consumers, each of us as individuals can enjoy this time of renewed economic power.  As expected, consumer spending has been rising with employment, however, higher wages also offer the opportunity to increase savings and to work toward long term financial goals – like attaining homeownership.  Our history of strong labor, work ethic and innovation has propelled our economy and improved the standard of living for generations.

Enjoy the Labor Day holiday – celebrate workers everywhere with your friends and family – but also keep your eye on long term goals.  Take advantage of this opportunity to put the economic malaise of the last decade behind us and use today’s improved circumstances to achieve your financial goals for you and your family.  Whether that is paying off student loans, reducing credit card debt, saving for college for your children, or accumulating funds for a down payment to purchase a home, now is the time to think beyond the present.  Happy Labor Day to the workers of America from all of us at Your AHA.
