What Needs to Happen with a Proposed Infrastructure Spending Bill?

A second government shutdown was thankfully averted last month and a bipartisan compromise was reached to fund the government agencies through September. With this crisis behind us, is bipartisanship likely to break out?  Can something productive for America be achieved with this Congress and President?

America’s Homeowner Alliance is holding out hope for the long-promised infrastructure package to come from the President’s desk as suggestions to Congress.  The nation’s crumbling infrastructure needs to be addressed. As urgently, America’s Homeowner Alliance will remind Policy Makers that roads and bridges are mostly used for people driving to and from their HOMES. This is to say, Your AHA is pushing for the infrastructure packages to include provisions to benefit existing and prospective homeowners.  After all – you are the ones paying for infrastructure improvement!

To us, this means creating incentives for homebuilders to build homes under $300,000 to meet the pent-up demand of first-time homebuyers; lifting tariffs on the lumber from Canada needed to help construct these new homes; and finding ways to help renters save more money towards their downpayment by thinking creatively about issues like existing and future student loan debt.

We maintain our commitment to our mission:  to protect and promote sustainablehomeownership for all segments of America.  As such, all of these challenges can be prudently addressed without producing undue taxpayer risk.

We have previously extolled the community and individual benefits of homeownership.  But from a purely economic perspective, building new homes creates employment opportunities; helps transform renters to new homeowners; inspires economic expansion through greater consumer spending; and acts as a catalyst to solve the inventory shortage that impacts the entire housing market.

AHA is approaching these issues on a bipartisan basis that will benefit all constituents and we urge the President and Congress to embrace affordable new construction and other homeownership stimulus as a cornerstone of any infrastructure initiative.
