Veterans’ Day – An Opportunity to Honor Those Who Serve

It was 99 years ago in the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, or November 11, 1918, that an armistice was declared between the Allied forces and Germany to end “the Great War” or World War I.  While it was a year before Armistice Day was declared a national holiday, it has been observed ever since then as a day to recognize and honor those who have served our country to protect our freedoms.  (It was re-named Veterans’ Day following World War II and the Korean War by President Eisenhower in 1954.)

This year, November 11th falls on Saturday so the federal holiday will be observed on Friday.  Please take the opportunity this weekend (or whenever you see service members in uniform) to thank our service members who currently serve or who have served in the past.  They represent our nation and values under the most difficult of conditions -- and deserve our respect, remembrance and recognition on their day of honor – and every day.

Housing-Related Special Programs and Benefits:  Available for Active Duty and Veteran Service Members

The Service Members Civil Relief Act (SCRA) covers all active duty, reservists and members of the National Guard and was enacted to postpone or suspend financial civil obligations to prevent the service member being disadvantaged while on active duty and away from home. These include protection from mortgage foreclosure, cell phone contract cancellation without penalty and rental eviction under certain circumstances as well as many other protections.  Check out the comprehensive list of these at or click here.

The Veterans Administration Loan Guaranty Program (VA LGP) provides a US government guaranty of mortgages for active duty and veterans.  The government guarantee generally provides a lower interest rate on a mortgage and the VA LGP supports no down payment purchase loans and refinances (or 100% of the appraised value of the property) for eligible veterans and spouses of deceased veterans.  This eligibility can generally be used multiple times (if the original VA mortgage is not assumed by a subsequent buyer of the property).  Review all of the benefits at or click here.
